History and Sights

Ireland is full of beautiful scenery, fascinating history, and abundant sights. Ireland’s climate is maritime. The east and south are the driest, and the east and inland areas have slightly warmer summers and colder winters than elsewhere.

The first inhabitants arrived in Ireland 6,000 years BC. About 4,000 years later, tribes came from Southern Europe who built large Neolithic stone monuments and elaborate gold ornaments. Bronze Age people, who arrived over the following thousand years, made intricate gold and bronze objects and weapons.

Celtic tribes arrived in Ireland between 600 and 150 BC. According to tradition, Saint Patrick arrived in 432 AD and converted the Irish to Christianity. The Vikings began to penetrate the region in the 9th century AD. The end of the Vikings’ growing influence is often considered to be the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, in which Ireland’s High King Brian Boru was also killed.
